Chocolate Cake 3

Chocolate Cake


  • 2 cups pastry flour
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • 1½ cup sugar
  • ½ t. salt
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 t. soda
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • ½ cup boiling water


  1. Blend shortening and sugar, add eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly after each addition.
  2. Add flour sifted with soda and salt alternately with buttermilk.
  3. Add boiling water mixed to a smooth paste with cocoa.
  4. Beat well.
  5. This batter is thin.
  6. Pour mixture in layer pans and bake 35 min in a 350° oven.
  7. Turn out on cake rake.
  8. When cool, frost with chocolate nut frosting.
