Every once and a while you can find a good cookbook with Vintage Recipes on Amazon. I don’t have any recommendations as I haven’t bought any as I prefer the handwritten recipes that you see on our site.

Raisin Spice Cupcakes
Yield: About 20 cupcakes

Raisin Spice Cupcakes


  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2/4 cup sifted flour
  • 1 heaping teaspoon each cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup nuts, chopped


  1. Put one cup raisins into two cups water.
  2. Boil exactly 10 minutes.
  3. Add ½ cup shortening and cool.
  4. Sift together: 1 cup sugar, ¾ cup sifted flour, 1 teaspoon soda, 1 heaping teaspoon EACH cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice, ¼ teaspoon salt.
  5. Stir into cool raisin mixture. Add one beaten egg and ½ cup chopped nuts.
  6. Spoon into cupcake papers in muffin tins and bake 30 to 40 minutes at 375 degrees.


Ice with powdered sugar or cream cheese frosting, or dust with powdered sugar.
