German Chocolate Cake

German Chocolate Cake (VRP 014)

Ingredients

Cake Batter

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/4 pound German chocolate
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • Vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 egg whites

Frosting

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup canned milk
  • 1 stick oleo
  • 3 beaten egg yolks
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1/2 cup nuts, chopped

Instructions

Cake Batter

  1. Cream sugar and shortening
  2. Add the egg yolks one a time
  3. Melt the chocolate and water together
  4. Add to the creamed mixture
  5. Add flour
  6. Dissolve baking soda into 1/4 cup buttermilk
  7. Add to mixture
  8. Add vanilla and salt
  9. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites
  10. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees

Frosting

  1. Cook slowly in a double boiler until thick
  2. Add coconut and nuts
