German Chocolate Cake (VRP 014)
Ingredients
Cake Batter
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 4 egg yolks
- 1/4 pound German chocolate
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon soda
- Vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 egg whites
Frosting
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup canned milk
- 1 stick oleo
- 3 beaten egg yolks
- 1 cup coconut
- 1/2 cup nuts, chopped
Instructions
Cake Batter
- Cream sugar and shortening
- Add the egg yolks one a time
- Melt the chocolate and water together
- Add to the creamed mixture
- Add flour
- Dissolve baking soda into 1/4 cup buttermilk
- Add to mixture
- Add vanilla and salt
- Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites
- Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees
Frosting
- Cook slowly in a double boiler until thick
- Add coconut and nuts
