Food History

Pies have been a staple in various cuisines, evolving from primarily sweet treats to include savory versions filled with meats and vegetables. Zucchini, a versatile summer squash, reflects modern trends in incorporating more vegetables into dishes for added flavor and nutrition.

Timeline

  • Medieval Europe: Pies were mostly meat-based and served as a common meal.
  • 19th Century: The introduction of more vegetable-based pies as gardening became more prevalent.
  • 20th Century: Diverse ingredients like zucchini begin appearing in pies as global cuisines influence Western cooking.

Recipe Discussion

This recipe layers thinly sliced zucchini and onions sautéed with garlic. Then, the mixture is mixed with ham, Swiss cheese, and a blend of seasonings. The mixture is placed into a pie crust and topped with a unique breadcrumb topping, which provides a crunchy contrast to the creamy filling.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this zucchini ham cheese pie as a main course alongside a light salad or steamed vegetables. It can also be a substantial brunch item, perfect for impressing guests or enjoying a leisurely weekend.

Preparation Tips

  • Thin Slicing: Ensure the zucchini and onions are thinly sliced for even cooking and a pleasant texture.
  • Drain Vegetables: After sautéing, drain any excess liquid from the zucchini and onions to prevent a soggy pie.
  • Crumb Topping: For the best texture, mix fresh breadcrumbs with melted butter to help them brown nicely and add flavor.
