Every once and a while you can find a good cookbook with Vintage Recipes on Amazon. I don’t have any recommendations as I haven’t bought any as I prefer the handwritten recipes that you see on our site.

Walnut Strips

Walnut Strips

Cook Time: 12 minutes
Total Time: 12 minutes


  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 3 cups flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 1/2 cups walnuts, finely chopped


  1. Cream shortening and brown sugar
  2. Add boiling water to molasses
  3. Sift dry ingredients and add alternatively with molasses and water to creamed mixture
  4. Chill and roll
  5. Cut into strips 1" wide and 3" long
  6. Sprinkle with walnuts
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 mintues
