Vintage Dessert Bar Recipes

Originating in the Midwestern United States, dessert bars, or simply bars or squares, are a type of American "bar cookie" that has the texture of a firm cake or softer than a usual cookie.

Often dessert bars are one of the more popular types of desserts at bake sales and are often made for baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, and weddings.

Does anyone know the recipe for Portuguese almond pudding? It had sponge fingers arranged around the inside of a tin, filled with an almond paste but there was also chopped chocolate, cherries and cream as part of it too. My mother in law made it every year for her husband's birthday and I cannot find anything like it online.

Does anyone remember a cake my grandmother called Cottage Cake. It was made in a square pan with chocolate sauce over it. So yummy.

I am looking for some help. I have an old, old recipe that used to be served at the HSOSF Convent on feast days. They would like us to make it for the 175th anniversary of the order on 7-2-19. The Sisters all remember it, but don't know how to make it. It is a hand written recipe that says:

Heavenly Hash 5# margarine 25 eggs (whole) 1 can crushed pineapples m. 10 can 20 cups p sugar 2 1/2 cups chopped nuts

The only instructions listed are: Beat sugar & m. until creamy

Nothing more. I have scoured the internet for any hints. They described as a very rich pudding like dish that was yellow.

Do you have any suggestions? Thank you
