Tuna Scallop

A Short History

Casseroles have been a staple of American cuisine since the early 20th century, known for their convenience and versatility. Tuna, being readily available and easy to store, became a popular ingredient in many casserole recipes, especially during the mid-20th century. The Tuna Scallop casserole is a testament to this tradition, blending the familiar flavors of tuna and pasta with a rich, creamy sauce for a dish that’s both comforting and hearty.

Tips for Making Tuna Scallop

  • Draining Tuna: Ensure the tuna is well-drained before mixing with the macaroni to prevent the casserole from becoming too watery.
  • Cooking Macaroni: Cook the macaroni al dente according to package instructions, as it will continue to cook in the oven, preventing it from becoming too soft.
  • White Sauce Preparation: The key to a smooth white sauce is to whisk the mixture continuously while cooking to prevent lumps. The powdered milk adds a rich creaminess without the need for fresh milk.
  • Layering: For an even distribution of flavors and textures, thoroughly mix the tuna and macaroni before combining with the white sauce.
  • Baking: Baking the casserole until bubbly and golden brown on top creates a delightful crust that contrasts beautifully with the creamy interior.
