Sweet Chocolate Party Cake

Ingredients

Sweet Chocolate Party Cake

  • 2⅓ cups sifted Swans Down Cake Flour
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • ½ teaspoon Calumet Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs, unbeaten
  • 1 bar (4 oz.) Baker's German's* Sweet Chocolate, melted and cooled

German's Rich Chocolate Frosting

  • 1 bar (4 oz.) Baker's German's* Sweet Chocolate
  • ¾ cup unsifted confectioners' sugar
  • Dash of salt
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

Sweet Chocolate Party Cake

  1. Sift dry ingredients.
  2. Stir butter just to soften. Add dry ingredients, ¾ cup buttermilk, and the vanilla.
  3. Mix to dampen flour.
  4. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed of mixer or 300 vigorous strokes by hand.
  5. Add chocolate, eggs, and remaining buttermilk.
  6. Beat 1 minute longer.
  7. Baking. Pour batter into two 9-inch layer pans, lined on bottoms with paper.
  8. Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) about 35 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly pressed in center.
  9. Cool.
  10. Frost as desired.

German's Rich Chocolate Frosting

  1. Melt chocolate. Blend in sugar, salt, and hot water.
  2. Add yolk; beat well.
  3. Add butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating thoroughly after each.
  4. Stir in vanilla.
