Based on the ingredient amounts it sounds like it does make a small gingerbread loaf.

This card has seen some wear and tear as you can see by the smudges in the blue fountain pen ink.

The original recipe card owner notated in the upper left corner the words “fine” – does this mean that the recipe is just okay?

The author notated that this recipe appeared in a Good Housekeeping magazine in 1948!

Look at those stains and smudges!

She notates that she made this recipe on December 18, 1948 and then on the bottom right there is the notation of “O.K.” – which is her second comment on this recipe.

On the bottom of the card are her notations of:

  • Used small loaf pans
  • Next time try square cake pan
  • Cake O.K.

 I wonder if she was testing this recipe for a holiday dinner, made them to be part of a holiday dessert exchange, or ….

Small Family Gingerbread Recipe

Small Family Gingerbread

Cook Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cup sifted all purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 12 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Slowly melt shortening
  2. Cool
  3. Add sugar, molasses, and egg
  4. Beat well
  5. Sift together flour, soda, sat and spices
  6. Add ____ whisk hot water to first mixture
  7. Line 9 1/4 x 5 1/4 x 2 1/2 greased loaf pan with greased waxed paper
  8. Pour in batter
  9. Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees for 45 minutes
  10. Cool 5 minutes
  11. Remove from pan
