Food History

Spice cookies have a long history, with recipes dating back to medieval times. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves were expensive and considered a luxury. Over time, bakers began adding fruits like apples and raisins for sweetness. Modern versions often use cake mix for convenience, making them easy to prepare in minutes.

Timeline

  • Middle Ages – Spiced cookies become popular in Europe.
  • 1800s – Apples are used in baking more frequently.
  • 1900s – Pre-packaged cake mixes make baking easier.
  • Today – Quick apple cookies remain a favorite for their simplicity and flavor.

Recipe Discussion

This recipe combines the rich flavors of spice cake with the natural sweetness of applesauce and raisins. The cake mix provides structure and seasoning, while the oil ensures a soft texture. Using applesauce keeps the cookies moist and slightly chewy. The raisins add extra sweetness, but they can be replaced or omitted. These cookies are perfect for a quick dessert or afternoon snack.

Preparation Tips

  • Use unsweetened applesauce – This prevents the cookies from becoming too sweet.
  • Soak raisins in warm water – This makes them plump and soft before baking.
  • Do not overmix the dough – Overmixing can make the cookies dense.
  • Use a cookie scoop – This ensures even-sized cookies that bake evenly.
  • Let cookies cool completely – They will be soft when hot but firm up as they cool.
