Oatmeal Scotchies

A Short History:

The oatmeal cookie has been a beloved staple in American baking for generations, known for its hearty texture and versatility. The introduction of butterscotch chips into oatmeal cookies is a relatively modern twist that adds a decadent flavor profile to the traditional recipe. Oatmeal Scotchies have since become a favorite among both children and adults for their unique taste and satisfying chewiness.

Timeline:

  • Late 19th Century: Oatmeal cookies gain popularity in America, often made with raisins and nuts.
  • Mid-20th Century: Butterscotch morsels are introduced, providing bakers with new creative possibilities for desserts.
  • Late 20th Century to Present: Oatmeal Scotchies emerge as a cherished variant of the classic oatmeal cookie, celebrated for their sweet and spicy flavor combination.

Tips for the Perfect Oatmeal Scotchies:

  • Dry Ingredients: Sifting together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon ensures even distribution throughout the dough.
  • Creaming Method: Creaming the butter with the sugars until light and fluffy is crucial for achieving the right texture.
  • Gradual Addition: Adding the dry ingredients gradually to the wet ingredients prevents clumping and ensures a smooth batter.
  • Oats and Morsels: Stirring in the oats and butterscotch morsels last helps maintain their integrity in the cookie dough.
  • Baking Time: Adjusting the baking time allows you to customize the texture of the cookies to your preference, whether chewier or crisper.
