Vintage Recipe Box 400 comes to us from Chalfont, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

It is a large white metal box that measures 12” D x 5.5” W x 4” H with a metal tag that says “American Home Menu Maker.” According to my research, the box was sold in multiple colors for $1 and included 212 “basic recipes” for an additional $.50. (See the image below that is an order form to purchase the box.)

At this time we do not know anything about the history of the box.

We do show that this box came to us with another box but at this time we are not sure if they were owned by the same person or the eBay seller grouped them together.

Ground Beef Skillet Supper

Ground Beef Skillet Supper (VRP 400)

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 can condensed onion soup plus 2 1/4 cups hot water or
  • 1-1½ ounce package dehydrated onion soup plus 3½ cups hot water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups sliced carrots (5 medium)
  • 4 ounces medium noodles (2 cups)
  • 1/4 cup minced parsley

Instructions

  1. Brown ground beef in skillet on controlled surface burner set at 250° F., or over a medium gas flame. Leave meat in chunky pieces.
  2. Stir in onion soup and water or onion soup mix or water, salt, carrots and noodles. reduce temperature to 225° F., or flame to low. Cover, cook 10 minutes. Uncover, continue cooking about 10 minutes longer.
  3. Before serving sprinkle with parsley
