I would do the basic creaming of the sugar, vanilla, and eggs first then sift the dry ingredients and marry the two.
I will make these one day trying 350 degrees first and see what happens.

Fork Cookies (VRP 001)
Ingredients
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar (or substitute 4 teaspoons baking powder)
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 cup chopped dates or coconut
Instructions
- Cream shortening and brown sugar
- Sift dry ingredients
- Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture
- Blend in dates or coconut
- Add scoops to baking pan and flatten with back of fork

I found this same recipe in my Great Grandmothers cookbook, that I am testing recipes from. I just found it interesting that it was here. Thanks for posting.
