Vintage Recipe Box 400 comes to us from Chalfont, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

It is a large white metal box that measures 12” D x 5.5” W x 4” H with a metal tag that says “American Home Menu Maker.” According to my research, the box was sold in multiple colors for $1 and included 212 “basic recipes” for an additional $.50. (See the image below that is an order form to purchase the box.)

At this time we do not know anything about the history of the box.

We do show that this box came to us with another box but at this time we are not sure if they were owned by the same person or the eBay seller grouped them together.

Filled Refrigerator Cookies

Filled Refrigerator Cookies (VRP 400)


  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup nut meats, chopped
  • 1 cup shortening
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar (3 ounces)
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


    1. Sift dry ingredients 3 times
    2. Cream shortening, add sugars slowly and cream well after each addition
    3. Add nut meats and mix.
    4. Beat egg yolks until they are light and then add them to the shortening mixture. Add water and extract.
    5. Add dry ingredients; mix. Chill dough about 2 hours.
    6. Roll half of dough into an oblong about 14 by 11 inches and 1/3-inch thick.
    7. Spread half of Date FIlling over dough very thin and then, starting at one of the narrow ends, roll like a jelly roll.
    8. Pinch edges together.
    9. Repeat with remaining half of dough.
    10. Wrap rolls in wax paper and chill thoroughly in a Servel, the silent Gas refrigerator.
    11. Cut in slices about 1/3 inch thick and bake on ungreased baking sheets in a preheated oven.
