Chocolate Spice Cake



  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup butter or margarine
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 4 tablespoons cocoea
  • 1 cup water
  • **½ cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • * Icing


  • ½ cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1 pound confectioners' sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans



  1. Sift together flour, sugar, soda and cinnamon.
  2. Heat together margarine or butter, shortening, cocoa and water; bring to a boil and add to dry ingredients.
  3. Mix well and blend in buttermilk, eggs and vanilla.
  4. Pour in greased 9 x 13 x 2-inch pan and bake in 375° oven for 25 minutes or until done.
  5. While still warm, spread with icing.


  1. Mix together until well blended


** One-half tablepsoon vinegar plus enough sweet milk to make one-half cup may be substituted.
