Chocolate Cake


  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon Arm & Hammer or Cow Brand Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening


  1. Have all ingredients at room temperature.
  2. Sift together 2 cups sifted flour, 1 tsp. Arm & Hammer or Cow Brand Baking Soda, ½ tsp. salt.
  3. Combine ¼ cup vinegar, ½ cup milk, 1 tsp. vanilla.
  4. Beat 2 eggs with 1⅓ cups sugar 1 min. (125 strokes).
  5. Add flour mixture, ½ cup shortening (emulsifier type) and ½ of liquid. Stir until flour is moistened.
  6. Beat vigorously 1 min.
  7. Add remaining liquid and beat 1 min. Fold in 1 pkg. chocolate bits.
  8. Bake in 2 greased 8" layer pans, 1¼" deep at 375°F. (mod. oven) 25 to 30 minutes
  9. Top with chocolate frosting.
