Food History

Butterscotch is a classic flavor that has been around for centuries. The exact origins of butterscotch are a bit unclear, but it’s generally believed that it originated in the 19th century in England. Traditionally, butterscotch was a hard candy made from brown sugar and butter. Over time, the flavor evolved into a soft caramel-like treat, and eventually, the flavor was adapted into various baked goods, including cookies and cakes.

Sour cream, the second star of this cookie recipe, has a long history in European and American cooking. It became especially popular in baking during the early 20th century because it added moisture and tenderness to cakes, cookies, and bread without making them overly greasy.

When combined, the creamy texture of sour cream and the deep, rich sweetness of butterscotch form a winning combination in baked goods. This recipe reflects the mid-20th century trend of using simple pantry ingredients like brown sugar and sour cream to create rich, comforting desserts. Whether you opt for pecans or peanuts, these cookies offer a taste of vintage baking traditions that have stood the test of time.

Recipe Discussion

The Butterscotch Sour Cream Cookies recipe offers a wonderful balance of sweetness and creaminess, with an added crunch from the nuts. When combined with butter or shortening, the rich, caramel-like flavor of brown sugar creates the signature butterscotch taste. The thick sour cream in the recipe helps create a soft and moist cookie, perfect for those who prefer a tender texture over a crunchy one.

One interesting choice in this recipe is the option between using pecans or peanuts. Each nut offers a unique flavor profile. Pecans are buttery and slightly sweet, which complements the butterscotch flavor, adding a soft crunch to the cookies. On the other hand, peanuts bring a saltier, earthier taste, creating a contrast that enhances the cookie’s sweetness. If you prefer a more subtle, buttery nut, pecans are the way to go. However, if you’re a fan of sweet-and-salty combinations, peanuts offer that extra bit of savory flavor.

The teaspoon drops the cookie dough onto a greased baking sheet, giving them a classic, homemade appearance. Some bakers like to press a pecan half onto each cookie before baking, which adds decoration and boosts the nutty flavor with every bite.

Preparation Tips

Here are some helpful tips to make sure your Butterscotch Sour Cream Cookies turn out perfectly:

  • Use softened butter or shortening: This makes it easier to cream the butter and sugar together, ensuring a smooth dough.
  • Thick sour cream is key. Use full-fat sour cream for the best texture and moisture in your cookies.
  • Sift your dry ingredients: This ensures an even distribution of the baking powder, soda, and flour, leading to evenly-cry cookies.
  • Choose your nuts wisely: Pecans will provide a soft, buttery crunch, while peanuts add a salty, crunchy contrast to the sweet butterscotch flavor.
  • Don’t overbake: Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes in a moderate oven (about 350°F). Look for a light golden color—overbaking will make them dry.
  • Cool on the sheet: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack. This helps them set and prevents breaking.
