Butterscotch Cookies

Food History

Butterscotch, as a flavor, has its origins in England but has become a staple in various American desserts, from candies to puddings and cookies. The term ‘butterscotch’ usually refers to the combination of melted butter and brown sugar, which forms the base of these delicious cookies.

Recipe Discussion

This recipe for Butterscotch Cookies begins by melting oleo (margarine) in a pan, to which brown sugar is added, creating a rich and flavorful base. Baking soda is incorporated to help the cookies rise during baking, giving them a soft, chewy texture. Eggs and vanilla are mixed to enhance the flavor and structure, and flour is added to bring the dough together. The dough should be spooned onto a baking sheet and baked just long enough to allow the cookies to set without becoming rigid.

Serving Suggestions

Butterscotch Cookies are best enjoyed fresh from the oven while they are still warm and soft. They pair wonderfully with a glass of cold milk or a cup of coffee, making them an excellent choice for a comforting snack or a sweet end to a meal.

Preparation Tips

  • Consistency of Dough: Ensure the dough is mixed well but not overworked; overmixing can lead to tough cookies.
  • Baking Time: Watch the cookies as they bake, as oven temperatures vary. Remove them from the oven when the edges just start to turn golden, but the centers still look slightly underdone. They will continue to set as they cool.
  • Cooling: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps them set appropriately without breaking.

Vintage Recipe Box 400 comes to us from Chalfont, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

It is a large white metal box that measures 12” D x 5.5” W x 4” H and has a metal tag that says “American Home Menu Maker.” According to my research, the box was sold in multiple colors for $1 and included 212 “basic recipes” for an additional $.50. (See the image below, which is an order form to purchase the box.)

At this time, we do not know anything about the history of the box. We do show that this box came to us with another box, but at this time, we are not sure if the same person owned them or if the eBay seller grouped them.
