Bavarian Brownies
Food History
Using cake mixes for brownies represents an American innovation in baking, where convenience meets creativity. The introduction of pre-mixed cake batters has allowed for countless variations in baking. Bavarian Brownies is a delicious example of using these mixes to create something new and exciting.
Recipe Discussion
This recipe utilizes a package of Pillsbury Plus German Cake mix as its base, simplifying the baking process while ensuring rich, consistent results. Milk, soft oleo (a type of margarine), and an egg are mixed with the cake batter to enhance its texture and flavor. Chocolate chips and walnuts are stirred into the thick batter for added texture and depth of flavor. After spreading the mixture in a greased and floured pan, the brownies are baked to perfection, creating a delightful treat that’s both chewy and crunchy.

Serving Suggestions
Bavarian Brownies are best served cooled and can be cut into bars for easy sharing. They are perfect for dessert, a sweet snack, or even as a special treat in lunchboxes. Pair these brownies with coffee or cold milk to complement their rich flavor.
Preparation Tips
- Pan Preparation: Properly greasing and flouring the pan is crucial to ensure that the brownies do not stick and are easy to remove after cooling.
- Mixing the Batter: Ensure that all ingredients are well-combined, but avoid over-mixing as this can affect the texture of the brownies.
- Checking Doneness: Start checking the brownies at the 20-minute mark. A toothpick inserted into the center should have a few moist crumbs for the perfect texture.
- Cooling: Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before cutting them into bars to ensure they set correctly and hold their shape.
