Banana Bread History

Banana bread has a rich history that dates back to the early 20th century. With the advent of mass-produced baking soda and baking powder, quick breads like banana bread became increasingly popular in American households. During the Great Depression, resourceful homemakers found ways to use overripe bananas, which were often inexpensive and readily available. The result was a moist, sweet bread that quickly became a staple in kitchens across the country.

Recipe Discussion

This classic Banana Bread recipe is straightforward, focusing on simplicity and flavor. Combining ripe bananas, sugar, and shortening creates a rich, moist bread, while adding baking soda helps it rise beautifully. The inclusion of boiling water in the recipe is somewhat unique, likely intended to help dissolve the sugar and activate the baking soda for a better rise. The instruction to bake in a “slow oven” is a nod to traditional baking terminology, referring to a low-temperature oven, around 300°F to 325°F, which allows the bread to bake evenly without becoming too dry.

Preparation Tips

  • Banana Selection: For the best flavor and sweetness, use very ripe bananas with plenty of brown spots on the peel.
  • Mixing: Be careful not to overmix the batter once the flour is added; this can result in a denser loaf.
  • Slow Oven: A “slow oven” refers to an oven set at a low temperature, typically around 300°F to 325°F. This slow baking method helps ensure the bread is moist and evenly cooked.

Vintage Recipe Box 400 comes to us from Chalfont, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

It is a large white metal box that measures 12” D x 5.5” W x 4” H and has a metal tag that says “American Home Menu Maker.” According to my research, the box was sold in multiple colors for $1 and included 212 “basic recipes” for an additional $.50. (See the image below, which is an order form to purchase the box.)

At this time, we do not know anything about the history of the box. We do show that this box came to us with another box, but at this time, we are not sure if the same person owned them or if the eBay seller grouped them.
