Vintage Recipe Box 400 comes to us from Chalfont, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

It is a large white metal box that measures 12” D x 5.5” W x 4” H and has a metal tag that says “American Home Menu Maker.” According to my research, the box was sold in multiple colors for $1 and included 212 “basic recipes” for an additional $.50. (See the image below, which is an order form to purchase the box.)

At this time, we do not know anything about the history of the box.

We do show that this box came to us with another box, but at this time, we are not sure if the same person owned them or if the eBay seller grouped them.

Food History

Yam or sweet potato casseroles topped with marshmallows have been a traditional part of American cuisine, particularly during Thanksgiving. Adding apples and pecans to this classic dish provides a modern twist, incorporating elements that enhance its flavor and texture, making it both nostalgic and novel.

Recipe Discussion

This recipe begins by tossing sliced apples and chopped pecans with brown sugar and cinnamon, creating a flavorful mixture that complements the sweetness of the yams. The yams and apple mixture are then layered alternately in a casserole dish, providing a delightful contrast with each layer. Dots of margarine are added for richness and to help the dish cook evenly. After baking, the dish is topped with mini marshmallows and broiled until lightly browned, adding a visually appealing and tasty finish.

Serving Suggestions

Apple Mallow Yam Bake can be served as a side dish with roasted meats such as turkey, ham, or chicken, making it ideal for festive occasions like Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners. It pairs well with savory items, balancing rich, meaty flavors with sweetness and spice.

Preparation Tips

  • Apple Selection: Choose firm apples that hold up well during baking, such as Granny Smith or Fuji, to provide a slight tartness that complements the sweetness of the other ingredients.
  • Layering: Ensure even layers of yams and apples to distribute flavors and textures uniformly throughout the dish.
  • Marshmallows: Add the marshmallows during the last few minutes of baking to avoid them from melting too much or burning.
