Apple Fritters

Apple Fritters

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • ¾ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsps.
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 eggs
  • 1⅓ cups sour milk
  • 2 tbsps. shortening
  • 2 cups diced apples

Instructions

  1. Sift, then measure the flour.
  2. Sift again with the baking soda, salt, sugar and nutmeg.
  3. Combine well-beaten eggs, milk and melted shortening.
  4. Turn the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
  5. Beat until smooth.
  6. Fold in apples last.
  7. Drop by spoonfuls into deep fat and cook to a rich brown, turning frequently.
  8. When ready for frying fritters, the fat should be 375°, or it should brown a cube of bread in 60 seconds.
  9. Serve hot with syrup.
