A Short History

Cookies like these Angel Crisp Cookies have roots in traditional American baking, where simple, wholesome ingredients were used to create desserts that could be easily shared and enjoyed. Rolling cookie dough in sugar before baking has been a long-standing practice to add texture and a sweet crust to cookies. This recipe carries on the tradition of adding cream of tartar and baking soda to ensure a perfect rise and crisp finish.

Tips for Making Angel Crisp Cookies

  • Creaming Method: Start by creaming together the sugars and shortening until light and fluffy. This incorporates air into the mixture, contributing to the cookies’ light texture. View top-rated silicon spatulas to hand cream your ingredients.
  • Egg and Vanilla: Adding an egg and vanilla to the creamed mixture ensures richness and flavor depth in the cookies.
  • Sifting Dry Ingredients: Sifting the flour, salt, cream of tartar, and soda helps to evenly distribute the leavening agents and prevents clumping, resulting in a uniform cookie dough. View top-rated sifters.
  • Forming Balls: Rolling the dough into balls allows for even baking and a pleasing round shape. The size of the balls can be adjusted based on personal preference for cookie size.
  • Sugar Dip: Dipping the top half of the dough balls into water and then sugar creates a sweet, crispy top. Pressing the balls slightly flattens them for even baking and ensures the sugar crust is well-adhered.
  • Baking: Bake the cookies at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned, to achieve the perfect crisp texture.
